What Is the Day Master in Bazi?
In Bazi (Four Pillars of Destiny), the Day Master is the most important element in your entire birth chart. It represents YOU — your core personality, natural temperament, decision-making style, and how you respond to the world.
Technically, the Day Master is the Heavenly Stem located at the top of your Day Pillar. Since Bazi charts consist of four pillars — Year, Month, Day, and Hour — each pillar contains one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch.
Step-by-Step: How to Find Your Day Master
Step 1: Generate your Bazi chart using your full birth date and exact birth time.
Step 2: Locate the Day Pillar column in your chart. It is the third pillar from the left in most chart formats.
Step 3: Identify the Heavenly Stem at the top of the Day Pillar. That symbol represents your Day Master.
Step 4: Determine which of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) your Day Stem belongs to.
The Ten Possible Day Masters
There are 10 possible Heavenly Stems, meaning there are 10 possible Day Masters: Jia (Yang Wood), Yi (Yin Wood), Bing (Yang Fire), Ding (Yin Fire), Wu (Yang Earth), Ji (Yin Earth), Geng (Yang Metal), Xin (Yin Metal), Ren (Yang Water), Gui (Yin Water).
Each has a unique personality expression. For example, Yang Wood resembles a tall tree — strong and growth-oriented — while Yin Water resembles rain — adaptable and subtle.
Why the Day Master Is So Important
All other elements in your chart interact with your Day Master. Career stars, wealth stars, relationship stars — they are defined relative to your Day Master’s element.
Without identifying your Day Master first, deeper Bazi analysis becomes impossible.
Common Mistakes Beginners Make
Many beginners confuse their zodiac animal with their Day Master. These are completely different systems. Others mistakenly look at the Year Stem instead of the Day Stem.
Always remember: Day Master = Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar.
